18The 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is an absolute animal, a track-focused beast that makes no apologies for its extreme nature. We got behind the wheel to see if this wingster is too wild for the street.
Visually, the GT3 RS is a really good looking car on the eyes with its massive rear wing, gaping air intakes, and racy aero elements scattered across the body. It looks ready to devour apexes for breakfast. Under the skin, this is the most powerful naturally aspirated 911 yet with 386 kilowatts (518 horsepower) from its 4.0-liter flat-six. A seven-speed PDK fires off rapid upshifts as the rev-hungry mill screams towards its 9,000 rpm redline.
On the road, the GT3 RS is far from civilized but doesn't feel completely unhinged either. The low-speed ride is remarkably compliant for such an aggressive setup, though tyre roar is ever-present. The steering is sublime with brilliant weighting and precision. However, the stiff suspension struggles to keep the rear planted over undulating surfaces, occasionally breaking traction unexpectedly. This is a car that demands utmost respect and concentration, even on backroads.
The engine is an absolute peach - linear, rev-hungry, and soulful. The gearbox isn't quite as impressive though, with some low-speed shudders before it warms up. Once heated through, upshifts are crisp but downshifts can be a bit rough under braking.
Where the GT3 RS really shines is when you open up the taps and let that wing do its work. On a racetrack, the absurd levels of downforce would allow you to carry obscene entry and apex speeds. On the road, you'd quickly end up getting intimately acquainted with a tree or guardrail. This is very much a pure-bred track machine that makes minimal concessions for street use.
Buyers will need very deep pockets too. The GT3 RS starts at a staggering $537,600 before options. Our test car cleared $670,000 with the pricey but stunning Weissach Package. For that money, you get one of the most focused and capable street-legal track cars ever built - as long as you have access to a circuit to exploit its performance properly.
The 2024 GT3 RS isn't an everyday proposition, but if racetrack supremacy is your priority, there's little else that can match its capabilities. Just be prepared for some compromises in liveability and to remortgage the house to pay for it. This is a road-legal GT3 racer in the truest sense.
