When a friend showed Red Alert back in 1997, I was instantly hooked. We enjoyed LAN games on those terrible modems and often a "No rush 10 minutes" rule was enforced, so the games went on until the lag was unbearable or it crashed!
Next I joined the Westwood ladder under the name "Larry", and for a long time assumed soviet's were the strongest. Until one day I got destroyed by 5 Allied light tanks! Looking at the rankings, the top guys were all Allied.
My map of choice was path beyond, and soon I was adopting the same early rush tactic, destroying most of the competition and racking up ladder points swiftly. But there were always a few I could never beat, because they would keep their tanks moving whilst firing. I assumed it was the x scatter key (which worked a bit), but I got annoyed with this and the deliberate d/c. I quit.
20 years later, I'm playing at cncnet.org from nostalgia!
