A playthrough of the DLC character Black Panther in the PC/Steam version of Capcom’s Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

A huge, huge thanks to user GodShin for the values for this game.
Christ, this is more like it. Black Panther fucking rocks, both as a character and in this game. Apart from, maybe, Venom, he was the DLC character I easily had the most fun with. What’s more, at the time of his release his film was on the horizon, making this one of the most sensible DLC characters, and possibly why he feels so fleshed out compared to most of them too. He’d previously appeared in Captain America: Civil War (and thinking about the DLC characters, they nearly all seem to be taken from Civil War in some way), before debuting in his own standalone film in 2018.

Black Panther as a character goes back decades, first debuting in the Fantastic Four back in the 60s, as so many characters did (Spider-Man being one of them). His name supposedly predates the founding of the Black Panther Party, one of the black power groups who fought for civil rights during the 1960s in the US, but it’s pretty obvious that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were inspired by the events of that time when creating him. At the time he was included here the Black Panther film had yet to be released, but it’s ended up as one of Marvel’s most acclaimed films, partially for the directing styles of Ryan Coogler, an up-and-coming director who so far has also directed Fruitvale Station and the brilliant Creed, and for its inclusion of rising stars such as Daniel Kaluuya, Michael B Jordan, Letitia Wright, and of course Chadwick Boseman as the eponymous character. The film itself is pretty good on the whole; the fact that it’s a mixture of futuristic technology with quite grounded themes makes it quite a palette cleanser as MCU films go, especially after the exceptionally comedic Thor: Ragnorok. It’s not only a good film in its own right but also sets up a decent amount of the emotional power that Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame have as well, and I felt like it had a surprising amount of maturity for an MCU film, with blunt but interesting themes and a very unique design compared to the other Marvel titles. There were some duff moments however; the “coloniser” shit got old really quickly, and as much as I love Shuri, her screaming “WHAT ARE THOSE?” made me pray for death. That said, these moments didn’t ruin the film to any extent, and it still made a great impression as MCU films go.

Gameplay-wise, Black Panther himself just brilliant. He is the complete opposite of Black Widow, in the sense that his moveset flows beautiful and he just plays really damn well. Design-wise, there’s something about the Black Panther suit that just works. It’s got a vibe which is a mix of both Spiderman and Batman, and it just works. The oomph that this game gives to his powers makes them look really badass too; large, colourful slashing effects are just badass in general, and give the kind of ferocious and power that you’d expect from someone called Black Panther. In fact, that was why I enjoyed playing as him; the hyperbolic element. Whereas Widow and Bucky feel grounded and a little dull, Black Panther as the over-the-top looking powers which were established all the way back in Children of the Atom, where the X-Men got even flashier, more zany looking versions of their existing powers. Black Panther gets much the same treatment here, which explains why T’Challa here is such a pleasure to play as, as it actually feels like they put some effort into him in order to make him fit in line with the general standards of the game. Also, being so flashy in a game so devoid of style certainly helped.

And, that does it. This failure of a game is over, and at the very least it ends up on a high note. Up next, I’m going to take a bit of a break (couple of weeks, probably), and then it’s time to go on to the last major point for this archive, as I return to the Mortal Kombat series.
