Happy Hallows Eve! πŸŽƒπŸ’€πŸ–€ Here’s one of my Junior projects, Umbra.
This is my first take on cosmic horror. Or maybe it’s analog horror?
The prompt we were given was simply to make a silent film. While the rest of my class took to the slap stick comedy side of it, I went for this πŸ˜… I clearly had The Lighthouse in mind.
Overall Im really pleased with how this came out. Especially considering the weather we shot in. It was raining the whole time and we were constantly threatened by an approaching storm.
Also, filming with an actual fire meant having to continuously feed it wood, which we went through VERY quickly.
Thankfully, the rain never got too bad, and we didnt need sound 🀘🏻
The ONE thing that still bothers is the gun smoke at the end. Historically, there wasnt really any muzzle flash from six shooters at the time. It was just smoke from the ignition of the gunpowder. It was even harder to gauge what the smoke would like firing the gun at night, in the rain. This made VFX for the smoke really tricky.
I dont think we got that right, but if I didnt include some indication the gun was being fired, then you wouldnt be able to tell thats what was happening.
Despite that, I love this one. Its an underdog in my filmography for sure.

A quick lesson I had in coloring this piece. In classic silent film they used brown fake blood, because the brown color made the blood appear darker on their black and white film. As opposed to having the blood red which didnt look as striking. So we did the same thing. Then in the color phase, I brought the reds down to make their skin look really gritty. In the film The Lighthouse, they shot with a glass filter that made red colors darker, giving them the same effect.
