Q: Why do high-speed collisions do more damage?
A: Damage is caused by force. The force an object receives over time is given by F = ΔP / Δt, which is the change in momentum divided by the time interval. Momentum (p) is given by p = mass * velocity. Thus, the equal-mass moons with higher velocity also have higher momentum. This means when the moons transfer their momentum to the Earth, the faster moons will transfer more momentum in a shorter timeframe, increasing the amount of force the Earth feels.
