A Warzone 2100 review in 2022
28Maybe it was just me being really bad at this game, but this was really difficult. Without cheats, I don't think I could've won. Maybe I should've played on easy mode.
The game has a strong beginning, but not-so-much at the end. Enemies just become too strong, and there's too many of them. You can upgrade your units, but that also increases the resources used, and you don't get as powerful as the enemy does. There are a variety of unit types, but I believe them to be meaningless. It gives you the exact number of fire rate and damage a unit has, but it doesn't tell you what those numbers mean. Sure, double the number for damage means double the damage, but when it comes to fire rate, or some other numbers...
As I mentioned in the video, the AI is really nerve-wracking. If you took more damage than you could heal, then I'd be okay with it. But when a troop won't do what it's meant to do, and it dies because of it, then I'm pissed off, especially because I know it wouldn't have died if it had just done its purpose.
The thing with this game is that most of the levels are the same. You use the ship to travel somewhere, you destroy everything, and then you go back, and you repeat the process. It's quite monotonous. I do remember a level where you had to defend something, but you were only given that something when you got to it, and considering it was in the middle of the enemy base, well, I lost a few times to that.
This game does have a few strong points. It's not entirely bad. Heck, some of these bad points are probably my fault. Considering you get a long timer for some levels (I remember one that gave you 2-3 hours), you're probably meant to take it slowly. My impatience was my undoing, but I had stuff to do, and didn't want to spend more time than I already had on this game. Most of the levels have unique design and each campaign has a different look.
