Actraiser (fan translation) | Longplay
This is a longplay of the Japanese version of Quintet’s 1990 SNES hit Actraiser with the Aeon Genesis fan translation released in 2016. I also play through the tough-as-nails “professional mode,” my successful run starting at 6:00:43. Tweaking many details, Quintet made the original English release somewhat easier, with slightly improved graphics and a minor new cutscene depicting Death Heim rising from the ocean. The most interesting difference is also the most blatant: the Japanese original, like so many of Quintet’s other video games, explicitly concerns God and Satan, not the censored “the Master” and “Tanzra.”
I don’t have anything new to write about Actraiser, at least not in this video description. In my opinion, though, while it might be unique, it is overrated and not remotely as good as its cousins Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. The simulation mode is shallow, while the action mode is afflicted with stiff and frustrating controls and annoying sound effects. Granted, God is animating a statue, so stiff movements might make some sense. The whole game feels oddly unfinished. Actraiser comes off more as a proof-of-concept than a complete vision, yet Actraiser 2 strips away the unique simulation mode rather than explore its ideas more fully. A later sequel, Solo Crisis, appears to strip away the action mode in favor of a deeper simulation, though I may be mistaken on that front, as English-language info on Solo Crisis is scarce. As late as 2019, another developer also took aim at an Actraiser-style experience in SolSeraph, for which I've seen nothing but bad reviews.
What does "Actraiser" mean, anyway? The levels are called "acts." Is the idea that we are raising the humans through each act?
I do not claim to be especially good at Actraiser. I have used many save states in this longplay, but I believe I have edited all of them out. Some of those edits are seamless, but for others you may notice. If I missed any, please let me know so I can upload a corrected video!
