When I first saw Full Metal Panic, I fell in love with it. It was, to me, a wonderful blend of action and comedy. The MC combined both hyper-competence and fish-out-of-water comedy. He was a Sheldon Cooper. I can even still recite a few lines from the OP song, 20 years later. I don't know why my friends never seemed as charmed by the series as I was.

I wish it could have maintained that tone longer, but the author decided to hunker down on a more serious tone and introduce a... metaphysical(?) POV where any world with military mecha must have been corrupted by outside sources, possibly from an alternate universe.

To this day, I believe it was intended to be a comedy series from the start. I mean, the title alone, Full Metal Panic! (parodying Full Metal Jacket), has a humorous tone. And the 2nd season, Fumoffu! was comedy gold.

To be fair, I suppose the author did drop a few hints early on. But it just felt so unnecessary.
