The R8 body incorporated Audi's ASF technology (Audi Space Frame); a space-frame structure made of aluminum.

This helped the weight of the body and shell of a car to weigh a mere 210 kg. Audi cut no corners when it came to quality; most of the body was built by hand, and an X-ray inspection device was used to check all welds at the micron level.

The center section of the rear spoiler rose at speeds above 62 mph, improving the car's aerodynamics at high speed, while dissipating heat from the exhaust when the car was sitting still.

While most supercars are defined by low-slung almost-cookie-cutter shapes, the exterior styling of the "Le Mans Quattro" allowed the R8 to stand apart from the crowd.
