Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery - Movie Review
2"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" (1997) directed by Jay Roach is a funny timeless classic. It is a parody of the James Bond movies, specifically the Sean Connery & Roger Moore eras.
It's the 1960s and everything is about drugs and promiscuous unprotected sex. British secret agent Austin Powers (Mike Myers) volunteers to be frozen in cryogenic state for thirty years when his nemesis Dr. Evil (Also Mike Myers) awakens and threatens to nuke the world unless he receives one hundred billion dollars. Austin instantly falls for his co-agent Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley) and will stop at nothing to be able to shag her. Dr. Evil's DNA is used to artificially create a son for him, who is named Scott (Seth Green).
The first Austin Powers is iconic and deserves it's status. I don't normally enjoy parodies but this is one rare exception. They get the Bond-isms perfectly here with countless references and inside jokes. My favorites were the "easily escapable overly elaborate means of execution," turning Oddball from "Goldfinger" (1964) into a shoe thrower, and the extreme attention to detail with an obscure reference to the born-webbed villain in "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977).
The main feature of the film is the humor though, and yes, it is very funny. Even if you haven't seen a single Bond film in your life you are guaranteed to laugh quite a bit here. The double entendres honestly never get old in this and Myers' charm really sells the whole experience. The film has a surprisingly great unique soundtrack and our two leads have a ton of chemistry together.
Austin Powers is a must watch spy comedy. Actually it's spy elements are intentionally bad so let's just call this one a pure comedy parody and nothing more.
