14"Come on, Ace. Something this big and you thought you could keep it a surprise? I was already on the trail of these swords the moment your scout got the info."
"So, you're telling me you had this master plan cooked up all along?" Ace scratched his head in mild bemusement as the deviously capable Jer Zhi reclined in his chair, the shadow cast by his hat failing to conceal his satisfied smirk.
"I was already putting in work, earning Gongsun Zan's favor so he'd more readily spill the beans about the location of those trasure swords. I had to keep up appearances by making it look like he had enlisted my help to repel you and the others." Standing at his full height, he looked Ace square in the eye. "You're a lot tougher than you give yourself credit for, man. Just try and relax out there. If you take a beating, then get back up and go at it again."
Jer Zhi's multi-dimensional chess game had paid some unintended dividends, not only providing more information and territory for the Shu forces but also bolstering his friend's resolve and (as evidenced by the previous battle) making the force as a whole even more effective.
"Alright, bro," Masamune called from the other side of the tavern as he approached their meeting table. "Now that the Cloak-and-Dagger nonsense is outta the way, let's get back to business. Cao Cao's forces are beginning to build up their ranks along our Eastern borders. They've been quiet so far, but..."
"Lady Crimson! Lord Masamune!" Through the doors of the tavern raced a member of Crimson's elite reconnaisance task force known as KageKitsune, the Shadow Foxes. Coming to a halt in front of her mistress and kneeling, the agent was subsequently lifted to her feet by Crimson's delicate fingertip trailing along the underside of her chin.
"What news do you bring, my dear?"
"M-m-my lady," The spy lightly stammered before regaining her composure. "There's activity along the far Northern barricades. It appears that there's an invasion force led by none other than the God of War looking to take Tianshui."
"The God of War..." Crimson's eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze seemingly searching the other's soul for absolute confirmation. "You mean that Guan Yu has decided to show himself, even though he's apart from his sworn brother?"
"If Guan Yu is taking to the field, then let me have at him." From the still open doors of the tavern, the Warden of Tianshui made his entrance. Absolute fury burned in his one good eye as he tightened his grip on the sword resting along his solid shoulders. "He and I have unfinished business. Besides... Tianshui is MY territory. I'll not have some egomaniac dare lay hands on it."
"Then you lead the charge, Xiahou Dun." Masamune nodded, smiling confidently. "The rest of the team will back you up to their fullest. Don't worry. We got you."
