Why do people care so much about ADR? There is a good reason for it, but not the best of reasons for it.

Because it means you are damaging the opponents on the other team. Therefore it can be an important metric if you're actually interacting with people on the map appropriately. If we take an in-depth analysis of statistics and, like democracy, have to figure out which is the least worst form of coming to a conclusion (or government, in democracy's case) then ADR immediately shows advantages over other forms of coming to conclusions statistically (such as K/D ratio).

Obviously, the best way of coming to conclusions would be watching the tape/demo and seeing what kind of decisions are being made, and what kind of impact is being made by that particular player.

Since it's difficult to statistically quantify "game impact" some people have found ADR as a decent metric. ADR is greatly superior to what your base grade laymen's understanding of CS might use to come to conclusions:

the K/D. So, you'll see announcers talk about kills and deaths quite a bit. It's right there and it makes their job really easy for them. Everyone who plays this game, especially the silvers, are acquainted with it. But, you could do, say 80 damage to one guy, 94 to another and 88 damage to another while they're rushing you and shooting at you and not get a single kill.

Meanwhile your teammate could peek after that (not saying this is a bad play) and clean them up doing minimal damage and get a 3k. Now, on the statistics it will show 3 kills, 0 deaths for your teammate. For you, it will show 0 kills and 1 death. Of course, it will probably also show 3 assists, but no one really cares about what's in that column.

With ADR, credit is given where credit is due for actual damage being done. Meanwhile, K/D can often be inflated (in comparison to ADR) due to just cleaning up scraps (killing people who have already been severely damaged and can die from a swift breeze or being spit on).

Of course, ADR can be influenced/infalted by a great many factors.
