I've been talking about making this EP on my Patreon for more than two years, but the whole process, and this song in particular, goes back a lot further. It's been one hell of a journey to get to today and say this out loud.
When you hold something so personal to your chest for so many years, it gets hard to let go - it builds up the longer you cling on, and starts to feel like a terribly painful secret that no one will understand. I've been so shy about this song for so long, playing it to myself at home and being brought to tears, because I wanted so much to be heard but it just felt too painful to face telling the story behind the music. The few of you out there who've heard this song performed will know I can barely play this without getting really emotional.
So, I'm looking forward to finally sharing Courage next week, because I don't just want to keep it to myself - I want this song to be yours too, and I want its story to create something good in the world.
I also want Syzygy to be a celebration of the harp and the amazing things it can do: power, percussion, anger, darkness, bass and groove, as well as beauty, joy, lightness and magic. The harp is all of those things, it is all emotions, all the colours there are, and I want to show you my version of that.
