PlayStation was the home of some absolutely iconic and influential 3D platformers... Pandemonium, Gex, Spyro, etc). None were more influential than Naughty Dog's PS1 mascot Crash Bandicoot. Like Sonic to Sega, Mario to Nintendo, Crash was Sony's flagship character and not only was this a uniquely vibrant, addictive and challenging platformer - but it sold a lot of units and inspired several games and the way that the genre evolved... Would the likes of Banjo Kazooie, Mario 64, Ratchet and Clank really have existed in their released form without Crash? Probably not! Hell, without Crash, Naughty Dog may still have been developing poorly received games for lesser consoles (I'm looking at you 3DO) instead of bringing us classics like Jak & Daxter, The Last of Us or Uncharted.

Crash is tasked with rescuing his love interest Tawna (a bandicoot based on Pamela Anderson - true story) from the evil Dr Neo Cortex - and he must do this across around 30 3D levels which vary from side-scrolling castles, forward moving across obstacle filled lakes or toward camera escaping from boulders like Indiana Jones. Precision timing and jumping to smash crates, avoid traps and kill enemies is vital. Each individual boss fight has it's own gimmick that will keep you scratching your head whilst you figure out how to defeat them. The graphics were somewhat groundbreaking on first look, and the humour is great throughout.

The internet went nuts on the announcement of a remastered trilogy courtesy of Vicarious Visions (the wonderful studio that remastered THPS and could have done more if it wasn't sadly absorbed into Blizzard) and for the most part it's great to relive the trilogy. There are always challenges in modernising older games - it looks beautiful. Unfortunately, it's far more difficult than the OG in the way that what was once square is sloped, hitboxes can be unforgiving or even questionable and jumps can be sometimes unfairly judged. Is it frustrating? Sure. Does this ruin the fun? No.
