Crash Team Racing was released in 1999 for the Playstation 1. Before Naughty Dog would go to develop hit games such as Uncharted and The Last of Us, their last Crash Bandicoot game was a kart adventure featuring the widely popular Playstation mascot.

Going after the popularity Mario Kart had, they envisioned a racing game that would appeal to both casual and hardcore players, by making them more accessible and also having complex gameplay mechanics.

Crash Team Racing would go on to be a mega hit, becoming a top seller on the Playstation 1, and being regarded as one of the most influential arcade racing games there ever was, with its legacy persisting until this day.
