Puna's Revenge is a level that revisits a familiar location from Tomb Raider 3, the tribal village from the South Pacific islands. Lara arrives in the dead of night, prepared to stop a resurrected Puna once and for all. The tribe is prepared to defend their chieftain, ambushing her from their village and laying traps all throughout their temples and ruins.
Out of all of the TR3 regions, I think the South Pacific was my favorite, so I was looking forward to trying this level out. It definitely didn't disappoint. The visuals, sounds, puzzles, difficulty, and presentation are done very well. Right at the start, you're greeted with the iconic ocean entrance, surrounded by tropical fishes and coral. Except now it's night time, with a bright full moon that lights up the shoreline. Every area you explore from this point on is a well-crafted gem, the builder making great use of visual details and music to enhance the atmosphere.
The difficulty can be challenging and there are a lot of traps and timed runs to keep you alert, though it doesn't get too punishing. Despite how open-ended it feels at first, I found myself progressing without too many hitches. Objectives are clear enough so that you aren't wandering aimlessly, and it does a good job of keeping you focused on what to do next.
One drawback is that there are a tad too many swimming areas, and I'm not really a fan of managing oxygen. You're given a small window to relax when you obtain the aqualung, but it only works in one specific area. The secrets are another small issue, since they're a chore to pick up. Instead of putting every item on one tile, it's spread out all over the place, which gets tedious after a while, especially underwater. Otherwise, I haven't found too many issues that really held this level back.
Overall, I found Puna's Revenge to be very engaging and a nice makeover for a classic TR3 level.
