Death Stranding is action game developed from Kojima productions and directed from the beautiful mind of Japanese game designer Hideo Kojima. A well respected game designer best known from his award winning Metal Gear Solid series.
Death stranding is set in an apocalyptic USA , where a disastrous event known as the "Death Stranding" caused "Beached Things" or ("BTs”). A once thriving tech world has been taken over by the creepy phenomenon called Death stranding. The Death stranding wiped out cities and almost all life while opening a gate between the worlds of the living and dead. Sam, the main character voiced and based on talented actor Norman Reedus, is given big task of trying to reunite America by traveling across the country and connecting isolated colonies via a wireless communications network. At the same time, Sam is trying to rescue his sister who has been captured by a terrorist organization on the far western side of America.
Sounds pretty easy and straight forward right? It would be if there wasn’t destructive Death Stranding creatures from a realm between life and death roaming areas on your path of destination.
Sam carries a small baby on his journey called BB in an orange womb-like bottle strapped to his chest. BB is essentially a tool that alerts him to the ghostly apparitions called BTs, BB will cry when it gets scared — this comes from it sense of imminent danger of BTs or because you keep falling down a slippery mountain . BB’s constant cry coming through the speaker on the PS4 controller can be very unsettling.
As you make deliveries in the game you’ll slowly learn more about the world, what happened to America and why B.Ts exists. Information is provided through talking to people while processing deliveries. Sam plays a huge part on rebuilding America through a variety of deliveries. From small jobs of delivering a hot pizza to disposing heavy nuclear bombs. Sam learns helpful 3D printing technology along the way constructing everything from helpful ropes, to weapons and even vehicles.
When it comes to the games controls i found them to be really clever especially when trying to balance and carry heavier loads. The rear triggers of the PS4 controller L2 + R2 basically became your hands of support.
The environment built around the story of death stranding is something i found visually rewarding. You would run through large areas of barren rocks and decay to find yourself at a top of a cliff looking down upon absolute beautiful lush scenery. The photo mode which was recently delivered in a game patch update provided me some wonderful photo moments.
Death Stranding will go down as one of my most memorable games played for 2020. I highly recommend you pick up Death Stranding and discovery the magic of Hideo Kojima. I can’t wait to see where his wonderful mind takes us on his next game project.
