Decap Attack (Sega Genesis) Is Macabre Fun... but Middling - Does It Hold Up? (Retro Game Review)
Released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991, Decap Attack is a side-scrolling platformer that was developed by Vic Tokai and was built from/is a reworked version of the Japan-exclusive Magical Hat no Buttobi Tābo! Daibōken.
The game features seven worlds that must be traversed by the player, Chuck D. Head, as he tries to stop the evil Max D. Cap from taking over the world.
Decap Attack is a good, and well-remembered, game for Sega's 16-bit hardware that has since been made available for every modern console (Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch) through Sega's Genesis Classics collection, as well as is available on mobile and the Xbox 360/PS3's Genesis collection. However, while solid and worth playing at least once, the game is also somewhat middle of the road due to some slippery controls and unreliable hit detection among its mostly run-of-the-mill platforming. It's not bad by any stretch of the word and is saved by its strong visuals and music, but the gameplay lacks a strong enough hook to truly stand out. Still, the game has a lot of charm going for it, and the fact that it's so readily available makes it at least worth a cursory glance (especially if you're looking for a fun game to help get you into the Halloween spirit).
