Album:Burn
Released:15 Feb '74
Recorded:Nov '73
Studio:Montreux Switzerland with Rolling Stones Mobile Studio
Genre:Hard Rock/Heavy Metal/Blues Rock/Progressive Rock
Label:Purple
Producer:Deep Purple
With Deep Purple Mark 2 members Ian Gillian(Vocalist), and Roger Glover(Bassist)leaving the band some time in '73, Deep Purple Mark 3 came in like a wild fire.Deep Purple's first Mark 3 lineup album BURN featuring new band members such as David Coverdale (Vocalist fronted a local group called The Government which had played with Deep Purple on the same bill in '69 and saw an article in a copy of Melody Maker, which said that Deep Purple was auditioning for singers to replace Ian Gillan. So he and the band were familiar with one another, and after sending a tape and later auditioning), and Glenn Hughes(Bassist/Vocalist originally from the band "Trapeze") who joins Deep Purple to complete the MKIII line up in summer of '73.The album was recorded in Montreux Switzerland in Nov '73, with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. The early rehearsals of "Burn" with the Deep Purple MK3 lineup started at Clearwell Castle in the UK in late '73(which was a famous venue for countless rock bands such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Bad Company, Whitesnake, and many others who played, rehearsed and recorded at).Deep Purple now with two lead vocalist that would shape the new Purple sound with Glenn's funky soul feel and David's bluesy style. In addition with Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale there was now more influential styles in Purple's music and would expand ideas to create a 2nd Deep Purple MK3 album called "Stormbringer" which was the follow up album after "Burn".Deep Purple MK3 would continue to play earlier line up songs from previous era's such as "Highway Star" and "Smoke On the Water" on the "Burn" and "Stormbringer" tours in '74 into early '75(before Ritchie Blackmore's departure and teaming up with Ronnie James Did to join "Rainbow")but now with Hughes and Coverdale taking turns on verses.According to Deep Purple's MK3 and MK4 documentary "Phoenix Rising", Glenn had an opportunity to be the vocalist that he wanted to be in Deep Purple that he could not get with the earlier "Trapeze" band days.Glenn did not want to sing the "OOOOOHHHHSSSS and "AAAAAAAAHHHHSSSS" as a background vocalist, but wanted to be a part of David Coverdale's lead vocals. Therefore Deep Purple was now fit with two lead vocalist creating a stronger powerful band. The "Burn" album was re-released in 2004 with bonus tracks and remixes such as "Coronarias Redig," "Burn," "Mistreated," "You Fool No One," and "Sail Away." This time giving Glenn Hughes more of a writing credit on the album that he should have deserved when the album was first issued in 1974(not credit for certain songs due to contract obligations). The story goes behind the rock score "Burn" is that during the rehearsal the guys in the band were playing this riff/piece over and over again.Ian Paice did not know what to play over the parts that the other guys were playing, so he randomly started playing drum solos and fills out of boredom. The guys said, "Ian thats It!"So the song/score "Burn" ended up not just being another Deep Purple song, but a song/score written out as a long drum solo with Buddy Rich like lighting speed rolls all around the kit like fire and drum sticks BURNING by Ian Paice.I've seen several awesome astonishing guitar improv/covers of this rock score/song on YouTube and was well impressed. But I really wanted my version to stick to Ritchie Blackmore's original take of this song with a combination of his outrageous energetic live take and studio take.In addition and most importantly I wanted to add my own flare to it(for example: lead/rhythm single note mode runs and add some big color chords like the one's listed G suspended 4, F suspended 4, D suspended 4, A/D suspended 2, A/D5, and a C suspended 4 chord to fatten or beef up the sound.Don't forget the Blackmore pick scrapes!!).I also decided to use my Boss DS-1 Distortion plugged into a Marshall MS-2 mini amp to get that boxy EQ sound like how it sounds on the original studio LP version. My version is based on the style of Ritchie Blackmore's take on the song both studio and live '74-early '75(before Tommy Bolin joined to complete Deep Purple MK4 line up)version with my own flare.
