DJay 95 Plays: EspGaluda (Arcade) Longplay
5Hey players, DJay here with a new bullet hell shmup longplay on an arcade hit of the 2000's, EspGaluda.
Description of the game:
EspGaluda is a steampunk/fairy tale themed vertical scrolling bullet hell shmup developed by CAVE and licensed by AMI for the arcades in October 2003 exclusively in Japan, running on the PolyGame Master arcade hardware and being the last CAVE game to run on it. A home port for the PlayStation 2 was released in June 2004. The game itself is a spiritual successor of ESP Ra.De in 1998 due to similar mechanics and gameplay. The characters from the aforementioned game appear here as playable characters (PS2 version only). Staying true to the title, characters are named after certain speci of butterflies and granted flight with butterfly wings made of psychic energy. It serves some inspiration for Mushihimesama, another bullet hell shooter by CAVE released a year later. Alongside DonPachi, it is one of the few CAVE games without a TLB requirement and without a 2nd loop.
In a fictional kingdom of Shinra, there existed a queen who passed down her magical powers to her descendants, and a king, Jakou, who didn't. When advancing alchemical technology grew at a rapid rate, Jakou became overcome with ambition that he sought to use alchemy to exploit the queen's magical powers to the fullest extent, as well as subjecting 2 of their children, Ageha and Tateha, to a super-soldier program named Project Galuda. Appalled by his actions, the queen sealed both herself and her essence away in spirit gems, but Jakou and his alchemists found a solution - harness the stones to create a spirit engine, raise an army and conquer the surrounding nations. Hiodoshi, an elderly alchemist, took the children under his wing in order for them to live a normal life. One day, Jakou's soldiers tracked them down, mercilessly killing Hiodoshi after refusing to surrender and the children eventually exposed their latent powers, killing the soldiers. Ageha and Tateha must retaliate against Jakou and his entire army to save the nations, and restore peace to the kingdom of Shinra.
With at least 5 stages to complete throughout the entire game, players choose between playing as Ageha or Tateha (or Yusuke in the PlayStation 2 port), all differentiating in firing range and movement speed. Playing similarly to ESP Ra.De, players use main shots and energy lasers that damage the enemy. Unique in this game is the Kakusei (Awakening) mode, which aside from changing their gender, also boosts the amount of damage inflicted and slows down bullets, as well as canceling bullets as long as there are gems remaining. It can be refilled if the player collects gems (a maximum of 500) by destroying enemies in normal mode. If enemies are destroyed in Kakusei mode, Tic Points are awarded, increasing the score multiplier (though they decrease during boss fights). If the player runs out of gems, the player will enter Kakusei Overmode which cause the bullets to speed up faster than normal and no longer allows bullet canceling.The third weapon is the barrier attack which inflicts heavy damage, as long as the player has energy remaining or if the player gets hit during Kakusei mode with energy remaining. Getting hit by enemy fire, even during Kakusei mode without no energy remaining, or colliding with aerial enemies damages the player, costing a life.
