Dragon Age fans like me finally received a sip of content amidst BioWare’s almost 8-year-spanning Dragon Age drought with Netflix’s latest short animated fantasy series, Dragon Age: Absolution. The show tries to scratch that DA itch for long-time players of the RPG franchise who are dying for a glimpse of Dread Wolf, its fourth installment, but simultaneously ends up reawakening fans’ limitless hunger for the franchise. Join me as I discuss, spoiler-free, what works and what doesn’t in this animated mini-series.
Dragon Age: Absolution is an adult animated fantasy mini-series that takes place within Thedas, the world of the incredibly successful RPG franchise, Dragon Age. Created by Mairghread Scott and produced by Red Dog Culture House under the supervision of BioWare, it follows a party of interesting characters as they plan a heist in the mage-ruled nation of Tevinter, with the party growing closer amidst the chaos and many battles that ensue.

Dragon Age: Absolution is an adult animated fantasy streaming television series created by Mairghread Scott. Produced by Red Dog Culture House under the supervision of BioWare, the series was released on Netflix on December 9, 2022. It features the voices of Mathew Mercer, Josh Keaton, Kimberly Brooks, Zehra Fazal, Ashly Burch, Sumalee Montano, Phil Lamarr, Keston John, and more.
The series is set in Thedas, a fictional world created for BioWare's video game series Dragon Age. The story will focus on characters within the Tevinter Imperium– a nation in the northern region of Thedas, which once subjugated southern Thedas during ancient times, and is governed by a powerful oligarchy of magic-wielding magisters led by an Imperial Archon. The Imperium is known for its strict caste system, which includes slavery. It is also known for its mages who practice sacrificial and forbidden blood magic.
Chronologically, Absolution takes place after the conclusion of Dragon Age: Inquisition, as characters make reference to events in that game, but before the events of the upcoming video game Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.
