Egg plays Golden Axe [GEN & PC, 1989] #01
0A classic beat'em'up with weapons in a medieval setting. The framerate on the DOS version seems to be lower than the Sega Genesis version and the sound effects and music are quite different -- the sound is less crisp. I still love the MS-DOS version's rendition of the Golden Axe theme though.
Pick from one of 3 fairly similar (they do have differences in magic use, weapon reach, etc but all are melee toons) characters and go on a quest to take out an evil dictator who killed your friend. It's a basic storyline but is adequate for the style of game.
I love Golden Axe and the nostalgic part of me wanted to rate this in the top tier range. However, the limited number of levels and rather repetitive gameplay / level design do hurt it's score.
Golden Axe is a classic that everyone should play at least once. It's not the greatest game ever made, but it does demonstrate that games don't require uber complexity to be good.
