The spots you wanna melee him in are actually very specific.
You wanna hit him as close to a path node as possible or he will walk (most likely backwards) to the last node, making it lose time instead.
That's also the reason why I didn't punch him down the last set of stairs and in the last room,
haven't found a setup at these spots (yet).

also after you punch him he will not move for a specific amount of time, you wanna keep punching him (max. 4 times) to keep him in motion, he will continue walking like normal after the stagger if you don't punch him again after it ended.
