174In The Hague the debate continues on the extension of the Dutch mission in Afghanistan. This drew Backlight to an area controlled by Taliban Afghans to ask for their opinion. For over seven years Western forces fought in Afghanistan. The Polish director Mariusz Pilis visits Afghan fighters and their commanders and listens to the stories of their ideals and faith. But he constantly gets the question why the Western troops actually came to this country.
Olaf Oudheusden simultaneously went to Ahmed Rashid, Lakhdar Brahimi and Robert Fisk, all committed to the region and the problems that arise here. They also ask themselves what the West is still doing in Afghanistan. Richard Holbrooke, the US diplomat who is trying to run the Afghanistan file smoothly on behalf of Barack Obama, making a plea for the maintenance of the Dutch troops in Afghanistan. According to Holbrooke a decision to leave Afghanistan would have historic consequences for Afghanistan. Afghan leaders in this documentary just want rid of all those foreign interference and shape the future of the country to their own values.
