Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (Episode 42 - Aerith's Dream)
5In episode 42, the penultimate episode (and one of my favorites) of this Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth playthrough, Cloud and Aerith awaken in Midgar within her dream. The two enjoy some time together in the Midgar Slums as we jump around between them and Zack who finds Biggs. Zack assures Biggs that he has purpose in this world just before Shinra soldiers gun Biggs down and Zack falls into the reactor but is seemingly saved by Whispers. Understandably confused as to what's going on in this world which is seemingly days away from destruction judging by the sky, Cloud asks Aerith for answers as they reach their special spot of the church. Aerith confides in Cloud how much she cares for him before giving him her White Materia and pushing him into a portal just as Sephiroth appears behind her.
Sephiroth explains to Cloud in this void that there are multiple worlds which branch out to different timelines as "boundaries of fate are breached (new worlds are born)". This obviously explains a lot with what we've been seeing over the course of this game, specifically with Zack's timeline where he's survived (something FF7 Remake actually set up).
Back in the world and timeline as we know it and specifically the Sleeping Forest, Cloud gives (our) Aerith the viable White Materia he got from her in the other timeline. Armed with this, she disappears into the Sleeping Forest to go on to the Forgotten Capital alone and fulfill her destiny of using the White Materia to pray for Holy and protect the planet from Sephiroth, just like in the original game.
As Cloud awakens with the rest of the group, they pledge to reach Aerith before Sephiroth does and hurry on to the Forgotten Capital.
