You can find a bunch of mods here, notably FFT + which overhauls the game difficulty and balances classes (although I don't agree with their decision to get rid of monk's innate martial arts...) Newbies can play it, but may find it a bit too difficult in the start, in the next update the creator will be lowering difficulty in the first chapter which I think will make it more enjoyable for newbies.

This is the home of the most popular mod, FFT 1.3. It is not meant for people who haven't played the game before! It is incredibly hard (but in a good way)!

Here you can find FFT Rebirth-- this is the only mod I would reccomend to newbiews 100%. It doesn't change the difficulty at all and provides some good balances and changes without modding too much. I do kind of wish that the author(s) had put in some other features like all characters can be renamed and bug fixes like the other large mods out there do, but oh well.
