Mako ist die Lebensenergie des Planeten, die der Shinra-Konzern mit seinen Reaktoren gnadenlos ausbeutet. Die Widerstandsgruppe Avalanche möchte das verhindern und heuert den Ex-SOLDATEN Cloud Strife an, damit er sie bei einem Anschlag auf einen von Shinras Mako-Reaktoren unterstützt. Hoch oben auf der Platte über den Slums von Midgar entbrennt ein heftiger Konflikt.
Nach der Explosion des Reaktors flieht die Gruppe durch Sektor 8, der stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurde. Cloud schlägt sich alleine durch und trifft inmitten der Flammen und Trümmer plötzlich auf einen tot geglaubten Feind.
Die Phantome seiner Vergangenheit führen Cloud zu einer jungen Frau. Sie schenkt ihm eine Blume und verspricht ihm ein Wiedersehen. Die Hüter des Schicksals haben die Weichen gestellt.
Die Rettung des darbenden Planeten beginnt auf ein Neues.
