I've realized that the tutorial in this game doesn't really let you know how to effectively use your scanner besides the fact that you can use it to identify the general location of an ore node or vein, so this video should help you better use your scanner.

Of course, with some time, I'm sure you can figure things out yourself :) I did eventually. Quick word of advice? Don't mine for ores in the dark. Make use of the campfire and torches you can craft because a little light goes a long way... like it'll help you identify nodes a lot faster since you're not digging blind.
