Hi guys, welcome back to my channel. Our series dedicated to Pep Guardiola continues, this time
I emulated Pep Guardiola's 2022-23 Tactic 3-4-2-1 box midfield, one of the two tactics he used in the last part of the 2022-23 season. This is next to last tactic. Last one of this series will be Manchester City 2023-2024 tactic.
Last year, for Fm23, in my channel I created and tested his 3-2-4-1 very offensive tactic but never tested this box midfield tactic, so I decided to do it now.
This video explores one of Pep Guardiola's tactical evolution greatest outcomes during Manchester City's incredible 2022-2023 treble-winning season, the box midfield, which is commonly used by other top managers like De Zerbi too.
Erling Haaland's arrival demanded a shift from Guardiola's "space is our striker" approach.
City transitioned from a false 9 with inverted fullbacks to a system with a traditional striker and a midfield four.
This initially worked with Cancelo and Walker pushing into midfield, but exposed defensive weaknesses.
Guardiola responded by compacting the midfield, but this left wingers isolated.
Injuries and experimentation led to various formations, including a back four with Akanji.
The turning point came with the emergence of young Rico Lewis, who stabilized the midfield.
John Stones' return provided defensive solidity and complemented Lewis' playmaking.
Guardiola revived a past strategy with a back three, maximizing Stones' control and Walker's defending.
The Treble-Winning Formation (3-2-4-1) solved City's midfield problems, allowing Haaland to thrive and wingers to exploit space.
With Dias return, the defense became nearly impenetrable, leading City to a historic treble.

In the video I successfully replicated the 3-4-2-1 box midfield variation in FM24 with Manchester City.

Work ball into the box
Dribble less (in possession)
Counter-press (in transition)
High pressing line (out of possession)
Higher defensive line
Trigger press: more often
Prevent short GK distribution
Drop off more
Trap outside

With this tactic I won all the trophies available, scored a lot of goals, winning many matches against elite opponents with even more than 4 goals and only sometimes conceding a bit much.
