Gauntlet Legends (Playstation 1)
Archer playthrough
Part 2/2
"Blind" playthrough, I never finished this game, but I finished Dark Legacy 3-4 times and it’s pretty much 85% the same game.

—Personal/Subjective rating—
[How good is this game: 7.8/10]
Positive
- Better than I expected and imo better that what peoples say about this version.
- Fun levels to explore.
- The controls are great (most PS1 era games have janky controls).
- Way way better inventory system than the one in DL.
- Nice atmosphere.
- Good variety of enemies even if they just change visually and have more HP.
- Many different realms to explore (about half as much as Dark Legacy).
- The last 4 extra levels were challenging and really fun to play (the whole game should have been something like that).
- Somehow less janky than the superior version on the next gen consoles.
Neutral
- Way shorter than Gauntlet DL. More or less 15h for Dark Legacy vs 8h for Legends.
- This is a repetitive game, even more than DL since there is no melee combos and less levels. You pretty much like it or don’t.
Negative
- Not enough enemies at the same time. Idk why because there is a lot of ennemies the last 4 extra levels.
- The hitbox for the anklebiter (small enemies) is broken/janky AF. It’s pretty much the only thing that frustrate me sometimes.
- It is still pretty much the worst version of the game, but that doesn’t mean the game is bad.

[How hard is it: 3.5/10]
Positive
- The 4 last levels nearly nail the perfect difficulty level that the entire game should have been.
- The last boss is way more dangerous than DL, he drain your HP like nothing else.
- You can’t max out (999) your stats like you can easily do in DL, it is more challenging and interesting.
Neutral
- There is way less enemies than Dark Legacy, ironically it is harder than DL.
- Some parts are way easier than DL, the underworld for exemple is a piece of cake compared to DL that have hundreds of monsters.
Negative
- Still not hard enough, if the whole game was like the last 4 extra levels, it would have been a blast to play since you really need to take your time to shoot every enemies, watch out to not get cornered and you need to use your special items, the only time that I really need to use those items.

[How good the soundtrack is: 7.8/10]
Positive
- The soundtrack is great
- The audio quality is good
- The sfx are not so bad
Neutral
- Don’t expect a masterpiece in sound design like Metal Gear Solid 1 for exemple
Negative
- Annoying hard cut in the music, the music doesn’t seamlessly loop or fade out.
- The audio mix is pretty bad, some really loud sounds sometimes.

This game feels less janky than Dark Legacy for 3 main reasons:
- The inventory system is not bugged to the max, you don’t lose some of your items when you take some new ones in your inventory and the text is not glitched every time you load your game.
- The pathfinding of the enemies works, the pathfinding in DL is broken, not in this game.
- When the enemy do his attack animation, if you move away before he hit you, you will not take any damage. Make sense?
In Dark Legacy, if the enemy begin his animation, you will take damage no matter how far away you move from him before he finish his attack animation. Not being able to dodge attack is pretty bad, at least enemies don’t do that much damage but it still take away a game mechanic that any decent game in this style have.
(I’ve only played the Gamecube version, the Xbox or PS2 version might be different)

Discovering some of the different level design was a fun experience, I would have just liked if there was more enemies at the screen, I presume the PS1 wasn’t able to handle that even if the 4 last levels have literally the same amount of enemies as a Gauntlet Dark Legacy level. So it was kinda possible to do that…
I still prefer Dark Legacy overall even if it is a little bit more glitchy than this game.
It has way more levels, characters and enemies.
I might try the N64 version or Dreamcast sooner or later.

At the end of the level before the Underworld and final Skorne level, I take a gold invincibility power up just before exiting the stage (because it is right before the exit portal). The textures of my characters got glitched because of that, reloading the save, restarting the console didn’t change a thing. This game was tested more than enough… I guess…
I presume they didn’t see this bug, but this was pretty oblivious and should have been fix before shipping the game.
It’s pretty much the biggest glitch in the game, it is not game breaking but it is visually pretty annoying and really bad for the end of the game.
