After 2007's GHOST RIDER was a flop with critics and fans (but a respectable hit commercially), Sony opted to continue the franchise more economically in the days before their shared Spider-Verse. Slashing the budget, they hired the directorial duo Neveldine/Taylor, who had cult hits with the CRANK series. With Nicolas Cage returning, all involved undoubtedly hoped this would salvage the franchise. Still, some curious, creative choices were made along the way, such as making the movie PG-13, a rating Neveldine/Taylor were totally unsuited for. The result was a movie that underperformed at the box office and might have fractured the Neveldine/Taylor duo forever, as they haven't made a movie together since.
