"God of War" (2018), often referred to as God of War 4, is a critically acclaimed action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game serves as a soft reboot of the long-running God of War series, moving away from Greek mythology to Norse mythology.
The story follows Kratos, the former Greek god of war, who is now living in the realm of Midgard. He has left the Greek gods and the chaos of his past behind in an attempt to start a new life. Kratos now resides in the Norse realm and has remarried, with a new wife named Faye. Together, they have a son named Atreus.
The narrative begins with the death of Faye, and the two main characters embark on a journey to fulfill her last wish: to have her ashes spread at the highest peak in all the realms. The journey takes them through various realms of Norse mythology, encountering gods, monsters, and other mythical creatures.
As the story progresses, players witness the strained relationship between Kratos and Atreus, who is unaware of his divine heritage. Kratos struggles with his own violent nature and the fear of passing it on to his son. Atreus, on the other hand, learns about his godly powers and heritage as the son of Kratos and a mysterious figure known as Laufey.
Throughout their journey, they encounter gods such as Baldur, Freya, and others, each with their own motives and conflicts. The game explores themes of fatherhood, loss, and the consequences of one's actions. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus evolves, leading to significant character development for both.
The gameplay features a third-person perspective with a single, continuous camera shot, creating a seamless and immersive experience. The combat system is revamped, focusing on Kratos' Leviathan Axe, a versatile weapon that can be thrown and summoned back to his hand. Atreus also plays a crucial role in both combat and puzzle-solving.
"God of War" received widespread acclaim for its compelling narrative, character development, stunning visuals, and immersive gameplay. It successfully redefined the God of War series, bringing a fresh perspective to the iconic character of Kratos while introducing players to the rich lore of Norse mythology.
