Сюжет основывается на японской версии игры для Famicom. 12 сентября 2631 года неподалёку от Новой Зеландии падает метеорит. Спустя два года появляется некая террористическая организация под названием «Красный сокол» (Red Falcon), поставившая перед собой задачу уничтожить всё человечество. База «Красного сокола» находится на некоем острове. Действие игры начинается, когда два бойца Билл Райзер (Bill «Mad Dog» Rizer) и Лэнс Бин (Lance «Scorpion» Bean), ставшие до этого Контра (бойцами, мастерски владеющими навыками ведения партизанской войны), высаживаются на остров, чтобы уничтожить базу и спасти мир. По мере проникновения на вражескую территорию бойцы выясняют, что за организацией «Красный сокол» стоят инопланетные пришельцы, прибывшие на метеорите. Главной задачей героев становится нахождение логова пришельцев и уничтожение их сердца. Выполнив поставленную задачу, бойцы улетают с взрывающегося острова на вертолёте. Версии для трёх основных регионов Konami выпустила под разными названиями: в Северной Америке — Contra, в Японии — 魂斗羅, в Европе — Probotector. Игра была сильно переработана, все уровни стали длиннее, изменились некоторые боссы в них, во втором и четвёртом уровнях (база 1 и база 2) был удалён лимит прохождения по времени, а последний пятый уровень был разделён на четыре обособленных уровня согласно их окружению (заснеженный лес, электростанция, ангар, логово пришельцев). The Contra series is notorious for their challenging difficulty and the first game is no exception. A single hit, whether by an enemy attack or even just contact with an enemy or danger, costs the player a life. Additionally, the player begins with only 3 lives, earning more by gaining a certain number of points. The concept of losing a life from a single hit is almost consistently maintained throughout the series. Conversely, the player respawns where they were killed, including when they use up a Continue (which requires credits, a staple of arcade games) after losing all of their lives. Another notable gameplay element of Contra for its time is the multiplayer mode, which allows simultaneous 2 player action. Although advantageous, both players would still need to communicate and cooperate, especially during the vertically scrolling waterfall stage where the bottom of the screen kills the player. There are two main types of stages encountered in Contra, amounting to 10 stages in total. The player navigates through horizontally-scrolling stages, and a derivative vertically scrolling stage (Waterfall); in addition, there are two behind-the-back, pseudo-3D stages taking place inside bases. The player must deactivate multiple electrified barriers throughout the bases by destroying specific wall targets. This must be completed within a predefined limit of time; failure to do so costs the player a life, the timer resetting upon the player’s respawn.
