H4G reviews Gunpey EX for the JAPAN-ONLY WonderSwan Color! Gunpey EX was named after the beloved creator of the Gameboy and WonderSwan, Gunpei Yokoi. The EX version is a colorized remake of the original Gunpey, and was released for the Bandai system in 2000.

Gunpey EX was named after the beloved creator of the Gameboy and WonderSwan, Gunpei Yokoi. Actually Gunpey was. Gunpey EX is a colorized remake. But why play the original when you can play the color DX…er I mean EX version! Just look at this box art!

If you remember my first WonderSwan overview/review I covered the history of the Japan-only WonderSwan, some of the quirks of the system and even did a game review. If you haven’t checked that one out yet, I’d recommend doing so before continuing.

Here we are looking for three requirements:

Can you play/understand it as an English speaker?

Is it fun?

Is it worth the price?

Gameplay:
You connect lines! That’s almost about it. But believe it or not it’s pretty addicting. The lines and angles cannot reach the top of the screen and the more lines that are connected, the better the score.

There are some different modes to keep it interesting. Most of them are self-explanatory. You are basically just trying to get a high score. And in the puzzle mode you have to make sure ALL lines, angles, and fragments are connected. Hence it being…a puzzle!

There are also options to connect WonderSwans and play multiplayer! I WISH I could experience that, I think it’d probably be akin to multiplayer in tetris, magical drop, et cetera.

There is also this weird phone connect mode called Wondergate. Apparently it allowed players to play multiplayer online. Very cool!

Graphics/Presentation:
The presentation is solid, simple and does a great job using the vertical screen capabilities of the WonderSwan ! The backgrounds are nice too! The music is frantic. I’ve read some reviews where people hate it, I personally enjoy it, it adds to the timed feel of the game. The best part about it is that they remade it in color!

So can you play/understand it as an English speaker?
Yes absolutely. All in English.

Is it fun?
Yes! Although not the best puzzler I’ve played, it was solid enough to keep my attention for some time.

Is it worth the price?
The EX version goes for around 15-25 dollars. If you have a WonderSwan color get this version, but don’t buy a WonderSwan color for this game alone. There’s a PSP version, a DS version, and even a Japanese PlayStation version that are all cheaper.

Thank you for watching, and join us next time!
