Outland is a 2D platformer, with a large open world available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. In this game the player plays a reincarnated ancient hero who has to save the world from the evil sisters that he imprisoned in his previous life. This game is akin to the classic platformer "Metroid" insomuch as it has a large open world that the hero gains broader access to as he increases his abilities throughout the game. The most unique dynamic to the game is the ability of the main character to shift his spirit from light to dark at will. Every enemy in the game is aligned towards the light side (blue), the dark side (red), or are neutral (yellow). Red enemies can only be harmed when the hero is blue, and while he is blue he is immune to all blue energy (shots), and the same applies to blue enemies and red energy when the hero is red.
I was a huge fan of the old style platforming "Metroid" games so this game immediately appealed to me. On top of that, the unique mechanic of switching your spiritual alignment to get through puzzles and fight enemies adds an entertaining element to the game. The game has a very artistic visual style that is beautiful and very imaginative. The game also includes colossal bosses that are fun to fight. I have enjoyed what I have played of the game, and would give it 4 out of 5 stars. The largest drawback of Outland, is that I have progressed quickly through most of the game in the short amount of time I have owned it. Nevertheless, I think Outland was worth the money I paid for it, and I recommend it to others.
