How Much Better Heavy Cavalry Is Than Light Cavalry in OG Rome: Total War?

Equites and Roman Cavalry have slight stat difference - the Roman Cav has +2 morale and +3 armor. But otherwise they are rather equal, except Equites is labeled as Light Cavalry and Roman Cavalry as Heavy Cavalry. Do the stat differences explain the performance in battle, or does the "Heavy" in the cavalry mean something?
