Released 11/28/1985, Ikki for Famicom is a port by Sunsoft of their arcade game of the same name that also came out that year. Sometimes called Boomerang and sometimes Farmer's Rebellion in the West, the name in Japanese means something like revolt or insurrection.

You play as the farmer Gonbe, a character who will show up in a later Sunsoft title, trying to overthrow your feudal lords and their ninja henchmen with the (optional) help of your friend Tago in the 2-player co-op role. Combining maze and top-down shooter gameplay, you must collect coins or defeat the boss to advance to the next level.

This game would never make it to the NES, and that was probably for the best. Jun Miura created the term kuso-gē (クソゲー, lit. "crap game") after playing the Famicom version of Ikki. This has since become a badge of honor for Sunsoft, claiming the distinction of being the first kusoge. I will say it's better with two players, but still not a great game. It is not the worst Famicom game of 1985, but it's close.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Top Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
