Game Reviews, Without The Fluff! Welcome to our short review of Road Redemption, jam packed with useful information to help YOU decide whether or not it's worth buying, all wrapped up in about 3 minutes!

Like many people, I picked up a few cheap indie games during the recent spring sale on Steam, and to be honest I wasn’t even sure whether or not I’d be even doing a video on any of them because I bought them more for myself than for that mad content.

But the best thing about Indie games is that, for better or for worse, you never quite know what you’re going to get until you first start it up, and in the case of today’s game, I was immediately hooked.

The game I’m talking about is Road Redemption, a fairly simple but highly addictive game about driving your nitro-boosted motorbike down a busy motorway, trying* not to hit oncoming traffic or fly off the road because you were so busy watching what was going on behind you that you forget that corners exist… Oh and that’s before I get to the part about other riders constantly trying to kick you into stuff or dice you up with swords and machine gun fire.

Your mission is simple – Find and kill the so-called assassin before all the other meathead bikers trying to get there before you. Whoever kills him first, wins a big cash bounty. Oh but if you die, it’s game over and you’ve got to start again.

Basically it’s a rogue-lite game with a simple and short backstory that’s as easy to follow as it is to complete, but like most rogue-lite’s the replayability is almost endless, and every moment of it feels packed full of butt clenching moments. Hang on, I probably shouldn’t use the word butt and packing in the same sentence or the YouTube police might turn up… It’s the kind of game that’s easy to learn but hard to master, and it doesn’t take more than an hour to complete the entire story, but even if you’re not a die-hard achievement hunter, you’ll still find enough content to keep you busy for 3 or 4 play through’s like I did, slightly embarrassingly all in one day…

The gameplay loop goes like this – You start out in the first of 3 biker territories on the map, known as the Reapers, with each territory getting progressively more difficult as you continue to get closer and closer to the final boss, the assassin. You never quite know what each mission will involve since it’s all procedurally generated, but you generally either have to win a race against other bikers, out-run the police or annihilate a certain number of targets on the way. Either way all the missions involve whacking other bikers with sticks or blasting them into the wilderness with a grenade launcher, whatever tickles your fancy really.

With an open highway ahead of you, you accelerate down the road and quickly start encountering other bikers, some of them weak, some of them not so weak, and some of them out-right terrifying. Let’s say you run into a biker with no helmet or shield, you can easily just whip out your sword and decapitate the fool for some free boost and a bit of hp, but if the guy you’re up against is wearing a helmet, or worse yet, is coated in an electric blue shield AND a helmet, then you need to be a bit smarter to get through his defences.

Firstly you’d whip out a sword or taser and give him a good old whack which should take care of his shield, then switch to something big, blunt and hammer-like, like a hammer! Then bash him over the head with that to get rid of his helmet, and then you can either go back to your sword and lop off the poor guy’s head, or just repeatedly hitting him with the hammer or drain pipe works too.

If all else fails, provided you have ammo on you at the time, just pull out a gun and blast him, or pull up along side him and kick him into oncoming traffic, whatever floats your boat really.

Each time you manage to make it all the way to the assassin and take him out, you can spend your hard earned XP on permanent character upgrades to gain more XP or start the campaign from level 3, 6 or 9, as well as unlock new bikes and riders as you go, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

It’s pretty cool, looks alright and runs great, but most importantly it’s exciting, satisfying and an absolute blast to play through even after several hours, so DEFINITELY check it out if you’re on the fence.
