1.) In the very next mission of this stream I re-learn the Oberth Effect and use it to gravity-brake at Mun for more efficient dV capture and return.
2.) Yes, I disabled SAS on my descent - but this build has NEVER worked since the aerodynamics update when re-entry heating effects could kill you.
3.) Because it's been a long time since I Kerbal'd! Until I blew another one up, I didn't remember. I just knew there were some sort of complications to it.
4.) These aren't fuel tanks and engines we're talking about. These are parts the developers get to model and weight AS THEY SEE FIT. Sure, it's "realistic" that these components behave as they do on re-entry, when attached this way... But they should have been DESIGNED not to.
5.) Because it's obvious what new players are going to build with them, given where in career mode the developers chose to unlock these parts. And it's a KNOWN QUANTITY what's going to happen when they do. In a Normal mode campaign, this will be purchased in just the player's 3rd (or 4th) visit to R&D! It's a big, impressive part that introduces the meat of the science collection game to unfamiliar players. AND IT IS BUILT TO KILL THEM.
6.) I agree. That IS a valid choice a designer can make; to teach players what /not/ to do by killing them with it. And if it's a mindful choice by the game's designers here... It is objectively a HORRIBLE choice to make! Just when a new player is starting to put some serious time and effort into building a more complex craft, running a more complex mission - likely after many, many failures just trying to get their first Kerbin orbit - you give them a part they can carry up easily and send far and wide to do whatever they'd like, (first Mun mission likely) and then when they get home from all that... A long, hard-won mission that put everything they've learned about rocket science (and KSP's roundly illegible UI) to the test... THEY DIE. Unceremoniously. Doomed since launch. Having been given no way of foreseeing it, even if the knew how to check the CoM... which the game DOESN'T TEACH!
