King's Knight NES review - Retro Reviews
16King's Knight for the NES may be Squaresoft's worst game ever! Not a fan.
This is one that was released prior to Final Fantasy, when Square was struggling to stay afloat. King's Knight came out after Gun.Smoke - which was a good and enjoyable NES game (Add it to your retro gaming collection, should be around $15) and well received. I feel like King's Knight tried to hijack some of the success of Gun.Smoke and try do deliver a similar experience in a fantasy setting.
Squaresoft dropped the ball entirely with this one. The concept of a scrolling shooter isn't bad. It had potential. But King's Knight is almost impossibly difficult. The controls are mediocre or straight up bad, the graphics are forgettable and the story is as predictable as anything. Defeat the dragon. Rescue the princess. Blah.
The price tag on this is low, but still not worth it in my opinion. If you're trying to grow your NES collection, it might be cool to have Squaresoft's first game. But if you're looking for fun games to play, leave this one out. It's dumb. Very dumb.
