ABOUT THE STORY:
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," one of the earliest examples of American literature to gain international recognition, follows Ichabod Crane, a superstitious schoolteacher who moves to the eerie town of Sleepy Hollow. There, he becomes smitten with Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer. However, his rival, Brom Bones, also vies for Katrina's affection. During a late-night ride home, Ichabod encounters the fabled Headless Horseman, who chases him through the dark woods. The next morning, Ichabod has vanished, leaving only his hat and a shattered pumpkin behind. The story leaves it ambiguous whether Ichabod fled or if the ghostly figure got him, while Brom marries Katrina. This tale, penned by Washington Irving, helped establish a distinct American voice in literature.
