Well, I haven't solved the crashing problem, but I've figured out a work around. It'll mean shorter videos and manual backups, but come hell or high water I'm getting this recorded.

Unlike most 4X games the emperor wars mod makes the first couple turns take quite a bit longer. You begin with well over 100 units so this takes a while. Once I get a better feel for what units I have where things should speed up a bit.
