Story 6/10
The story in Quern really ended up being the biggest problem I had with this game. You start off by walking through a gateway and reading a mysterious letter that tells you to solve puzzles left behind by some scholar man. The game has you continue this for what feels like years before throwing in a magical wisp lady who only vaguely whispers about her story at a painfully slow pace until she literally DUMPS every detail about her past on to you in one, 15 minute, swoop. The pacing of the game had been so nice up until then, the scholar told you what you needed to know when you needed to know it, all was well. For me the wisp lady really ruined the experience. Maybe if they paced out her story more it would have been more enjoyable. Over all an interesting story, just not very well orchestrated.
Graphics 9/10
The graphics in Quern are GORGEOUS. There are tiny details that the game begs you to look at in order to solve some puzzles. Overlooking something as simple as a doormat could send you on a goose chase for quite literally half an hour. Quern is an intense puzzle game and prides itself on it's unique puzzle/design structures and the graphics really add to that aspect by being so on point.
Audio 8/10
The audio in this game is beautiful! Each new area you come across has a gorgeous new soundtrack. Each time you interact with the world presents a new, solid, bite of sound that just....Fits. Everything in this game sounded beautiful but what really stuck in the voice acting. These actors are great! Their dialogues sounded so natural and fluid, it was really quite impressive.
Controls
WASD and mouse. Something that is worth pointing out is the in game screenshot feature. Being able to write down what you are looking at really helps in puzzles that require a code or an amazing memory. A really nice touch!
TL;DR
Quern: Undying Thoughts is a game that promises to be unique, and it is. Quern prides itself on creating a world for the player to really get to know, it isn't a linear adventure; complete puzzle, move on, complete puzzle, move on, end of game. Instead, Quern provides clues and puzzles in areas you've already been in, it forces the player to really take in the surrounding areas to find clues and answers to puzzles HOURS down the road. There is a lot of backtracking in this game but the fact that there was always something new made it worth it. While it's story fell flat for me, it doesn't take away from the main focus of the game. Zadbox set out to make an amazing puzzle experience and they absolutely did. One of the most intense puzzle games I've played!
Do I recommend this game? : YEAH PLEASE CHECK IT OUT OH GOSH.
Should you buy this game? : Yes! It is a bit up there in price but you get more than your monies worth with this game, promise!
