Let's Play Rodland (GB) #02: Rescuing Mom
Our ascent of the Maboots Tower has been metoeric to say the least, smashing all the enemies that stand in our way and amassing many extra lives. Those lives are slowly being whittled away, however, by the increasing difficulty as we draw near to the one who kidnapped our mom because... reasons? Why DID they kidnap her anyway? I don't remember if the Amiga game ever tells us why, but hopefully this game will remind me. It might not though, leaving us in the dark about why we were forced to go on this whole adventure.
Honestly, I'm just happy the game has a plot at all outside the manual. Games from this time tended to do that a lot.
So, is the Game Boy port of Rodland a good one? I'd say it is. Considering the lesser power of the Game Boy, the developers managed to translate the gameplay pretty well and retain much of the original charm of the Amiga version. There were of course concessions that had to be made: the scrolling levels, the graphics and the music, but they still did a good job of making it as close to the original as possible. There are only a few minor foibles that I can complain about - mainly how some of the music tracks cut off early and that the hitboxes of certain bosses are iffy - but all in all, it's a solid port that it is fun in its own right. If you haven't played Rodland before and can't get access to the Amiga version, this is a good one to check out.
So, what's next? I think it's time for another adorable game and one that I've never played before. One thing is for sure, it has some glowing reviews and I hope that will mean that puzzling through the mountainous challenges it presents me will rock.
See you next let's play!
