The 2nd half of NOPEvember 2022 was the cult classic Hideo Kojima game Snatcher! The Sega CD version, the only one to ever get an English release, brought to you in 4K thanks to the wonder of emulation.
50 years after the chemical weapon Lucifer-Alpha killed half of the world's population, robots with a knack for identity theft - known as Snatchers, the bio-roid menace - are on the loose. Around the same time, the mysterious amnesiac Gillian (or Jillian, the game doesn't bother) Seed is assigned to JUNKER, an organization tasked with finding and destroying Snatchers.
It's time to end the Snatchers! Gillian and company make their way through Queen's Hospital, only to find out that there was a traitor in their midst. After making it back to the HQ, there is a teary farewell to someone close to us... but it doesn't take long before we get to take care of the one who caused it.
With the whole city at stake, we set out for one last job to save countless innocent lives. Gillian and Jamie have something to do with all that has happened, but what? And who is Random Hajile? What do the Snatchers even want? Today, we get our answers.
Snatcher was a great game when it came out and the story has held up. Clearly drawing heavily from movies like Blade Runner and The Terminator, it combines a nicely fleshed-out cyberpunk world with mostly adequate gameplay elements. It's age does show at every corner, though - between the incessant swapping between having to LOOK at and then INVESTIGATE things and the (only partially optional) many now considered inappropriate and cringy scenes, it is not perfect. And then there's the Kojima-specific issues with the pacing of giving you just enough answers to keep playing, only to subject you to the huge info dump at the end.
