Let's Play Stray #19: A Shining Hope for the Mewture
We find ourselves in the area that those who once controlled the shelter called home. In stark contrast to the grimy and bustling town below, this area is pristine and empty, a tomb for a people long gone. It's fallen to B12 and us to open the roof sealing this place off from the rest of the world and, in doing so, reach the surface, but at what cost? What sacrifices have we yet to make to free those trapped here?
Two long journeys may be drawing to a close, but another one is only just beginning.
What can I say about Stray that I haven't already in these videos? It's a wonderful game, a beautiful experience and a joy to play. The graphics are great, the world interesting to explore and the mystery fun to uncover. The characters were interesting and playing as a cat was both charming and straightforward. Occasionally I got stuck but never for long and the game is incrediably forgiving with its challenge, something that I like. What music there was was more atmospheric which suited the game well and though it's not long, I think that was a good thing. The game didn't outstay its welcome, nor strive to be anything more than it was and it was awesome. If I were to suggest improvements, they would be few and minor. The game checkpointing after you find a memory or collectible would be nice, as would a dedicated save feature to ease backtracking, but those are very minor quibbles.
If you enjoy platformers and games focused on on telling a story, this is the game for you. It's also the game for you if you like cats, but I think that was a given.
So, what's next? I ran a pair of votes - one whose shortlist was selected by my patreons on Patreon - and the overwhelming winner of both was Grimrock 2. It's a game I've always had in the back of my mind and now it's time to play it. It'll be awesome to see what improvements were made on the first entry in the series and the story that my party will uncover and I hope you'll be there for it.
See you next let's play!
