Let's Play Ultima Adventures! Highly Modified Shard (Ruins and Riches) | Ultima Online | Episode 5
This shard is called "Ultima Adventures" and is a heavily modified version of Djeryv's Ultima Odyssey: Ruins and Riches which was already heavily modified and fully customized version of the base Ultima Online. The concept of this shard was to bring that to a static online version of the game whereas Ruins and Riches was (primarily) designed to be played offline or with a couple of friends. FinalTwist had his own ideas and Adventures is what we ended up with - it's quite the interesting take on Ruins and Riches. While I personally still prefer RR at the end of the day, I love what Adventures offers and enjoy it from time to time - but in particular I really like the "Soulbound" option that is given, this is by far my favorite and the most addicting thing about Adventures in particular. This is the playstyle I'd like to highlight with this playthrough.
Details of playthrough:
Soulbounds are almost like a "hardcore" sort of character, or a rogue-lite even. When you spawn you are given about 225 skill points distributed into 3 skills (usually, some templates have a little more) based on one of about 8-11 templates. This could be a thief, mage, tamer, etc. If you die again, you'll respawn without any skill gains, the bank will be wiped, etc and you will begin again as a new template. The twist is that as you kill creatures/monsters and gain fame, you also gain soul force. Once you gain a certain threshold, you can acquire a "Soul Vault". As you gain more soul essence, you can pour that into the vault and redeem it for beneficial perks on your character. Soulbound characters cannot use items with special abilities - rather they can use any item but they will not receive the benefit of certain affixes, ie if the mace has +8 macing, you will not receive that bonus. However with the vault you can gain benefits like +20% skill gain (and much more over time) as well as bonuses to resist, swing speed, damage, stats, etc and more. This is the one thing that does carry over upon death, so the idea is that you slowly build up more and more power in your vault over time, throughout all the incarnations. It's a really interesting way to play.
