Wolfenstein: The New Order is a first-person shooter developed by MachineGames. It was first published by Bethesda Softworks on May 20, 2104 for Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
A soft reboot of the series, The New Order is a loose sequel to 2009's Wolfenstein. The Nazis have made astonishing gains against the Allies and Soviets, primarily due to technological advances spearheaded by Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse, whom protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz faced in Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
After a failed raid on Deathhead's fortress at the Baltic coast, BJ spends 14 years in a catatonic state in a Polish asylum. In 1960, he finally wakes up, only to discover that the Nazis have won the war and taken over the entire world. Facing greater odds than ever before, BJ embarks on a quest to find the still-active Kreisau Circle resistance group and bring down Deathhead once and for all.
Wolfenstein: The New Order is a first-person shooter with light exploration and adventure elements. Stealth is encouraged on certain sections of the game to avoid enemy officers calling in reinforcements. The game allows the player to carry almost all the game's weapons at once, and does neither feature regenerating health nor a multiplayer mode.
The game received positive critical reviews, with critics praising the dystopian setting and combat mechanics. Wolfenstein: The New Order received a 2015 standalone expansion, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, as well as a 2017 sequel, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.
