Designed by Brian Eddy and Lyman Sheats and released in 1997 by Williams, Medieval Madness has been brought out of the dark ages and into the digital age thanks to Farsight Studio's Pinball Arcade. The object of the game is to defeat the king in the Battle for the Kingdom. Before you can do this you must obtain 6 titles by completing different goals on the table, such as destroying 10 trolls, saving 3 damsels, scoring 3 peasant revolts, slamming 3 catapults, winning 3 jousts, and destroying 6 castles, which usually takes the most effort. Medieval Madness features a wide playfield with 2 flippers, 2 ramps, the usual orbits and bumpers, and a castle with a retractable drawbridge over a moat. The interaction with the castle is awesome, and it really feels like you're trying to break down the gate and penetrate the wall. Once you make it inside the castle collapses. And requires more shots to destroy every subsequent time. There's also a catapult where you'll get to launch chickens and cats for more support. And 2 trolls will occasionally pop out the ground. The castle is pushed really far back and there's room for error thanks to the big open playfield. Focus your efforts on getting the bridge down and gate open, the other objectives should happen naturally. The ball is really easy to catch on this table-- from either side, so take time with your shots. If the trolls pop up just aim though the middle. Hopefully you hit the castle and roll back getting free hits in. The complexity of the table is even-keeled, so its good for beginners looking to go medieval. Overall, Medieval Madness is a great battlefield for a very physical game of pinball. There's a lot of nudging involved especially when you've got the ball coming straight back down the middle. But you can usually see it coming from far away-- good for learning how to nudge. Bonus fact: Did you know that Tina Fey provided voices for this?
