Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts gelingt es dem Wissenschaftler Dr. Thomas Light menschenähnliche Roboter zu erschaffen: Mega Man und als Haushälterin Roll. Es folgten sechs Weitere, die Dr. Light zusammen mit seinem Kollegen Dr. Wily (Albert W. Wily) erschafft um als Aufseher für einfache Arbeitsroboter zu dienen und dementsprechend „Robot Master" genannt werden. In einem Anflug von Größenwahn programmiert Wily diese neu, um ihm die Weltherrschaft zu sichern.
Mega Man bittet Dr. Light ihm die Möglichkeit zu geben Wily aufzuhalten, worauf dieser ihn widerstrebend in einen Kampfroboter umarbeitet.
